About the OARC

The Ottawa Amateur Radio Club Inc. (OARC) is an association of radio amateurs devoted to the promotion of interest in amateur radio communications in the National Capital Area and to the advancement and achievement of club members.

The OARC can trace its origins to the early 1930's when the Ottawa Radio Transmitting Association was spun off from a radio listening club. During the war the club met at Rockliffe Air Base, then during the '50s it moved to St. Patrick's College and later to the National Research Council building at 100 Sussex Drive. It was incorporated in 1979 and in 1990 it began holding its meetings in what was then the Regional Municipality of Ottawa-Carleton (RMOC) Headquarters building, 111 Lisgar St., at Elgin, in downtown Ottawa. The meetings continue in this building, however the building was renamed as the new Ottawa City Hall in 2000.

The club holds Amateur call sign VE3RC. This call is used at many community events and on field day.

The club runs a 10 metre beacon just south of the city. VE3TEN 28.175 Mhz

The club runs the VE2CRA repeater
2 m: 146.940 - MHz (100hz CTCSS)
70 cm: 443.300 + MHz (100hz CTCSS)
This repeater is set up at Camp Fortune. We also have satellite receivers set up downtown and east of the city for the 2m repeater. This gives us good coverage downtown as well as east and west of the city.

We sponsor both the Joe Norton award and the National Capital award.

Membership is open to all those interested in amateur radio and visitors are most welcome. The meetings provide an opportunity to gain technical information, learn about new regulations, and just talk to other hams.

If you are not a ham, we can get you started towards getting your "ticket", either with mentoring or pointing you towards our course or elsewhere. (Another club or online resources)

Our club repeater is one of the widest coverage repeaters going in east Ontario with coverage extending nearly halfway to Kingston and halfway to Montreal to the east. We have active satellite receivers downtown and to the east with even better coverage.

Our hamfest/fleamarket is the largest in the area.

We have a monthly newsletter you can receive either by e-mail or by regular mail, as a member you will receive this before it is posted on the web here.

The OARC has had some of the best technical and not so technical talks going, which include such diverse topics as Ernie Brown's (VA3OEB) World War II experiences in the merchant marine, Clare Fowler's (VE3NPC) talks on satellites and Peter Devanney's (VA3YOW) talk on Civil Air Search and Rescue (CASARA.)

Our club is famous for club projects Our projects page which can range from a simple 2m antenna to involved smd projects.

Come out for helping in field day or the ski marathon or other events.

Last of all, our meetings are anything but boring! We always have a good time and ragchew.
