SUMMARY:World Amateur Radio Day 2026
DESCRIPTION:Get involved with World Amateur Radio Day 2026! \nOttawa Amateur Radio operators will join others worldwide in celebrating World Amateur Radio Day\, taking to the airwaves in celebration of amateur radio and commemorating the formation of the International Amateur Radio Union (IARU) on April 18\, 1925. The IARU has announced that the theme for this year’s World Amateur Radio Day will be “Advancing the Spirit of Amateur Radio Through Innovation”.  Here are a few local activities: \n\nThe newly created AuxComm services team\, is planning an exercise in West Carleton\, where they will set up radio stations in several locations to demonstrate passing messages between communities using both the VE2CRA and the  VE2REH repeater systems. There will also be a demonstration table at the Kinburn Client Centre where you can learn more about why this technology is becoming so popular for off-grid communication especially during emergencies. Drop by from 10:00pm to 3:00pm to find out what you need to get started.\n\n  \n\nRadio Amateurs of Canada (RAC) is once again holding a “Get on the Air on World Amateur Radio Day” special event in which it encourage as many Amateurs as possible to get on the air and contact as many RAC stations as possible. Contact one or more of these stations will be eligible for a special commemorative certificate noting their participation in RAC’s Get on the Air on World Amateur Radio Day Event. Click here for more info on this special event.\n\n  \n\nThe Ottawa Valley Mobile Radio Club (OVMRC) are planning to do parks on the air (POTA) activities at several parks.

SUMMARY:OARC Monthly Meeting – April 2026 - HOMEBREW NIGHT
DESCRIPTION:The April 2026 OARC Monthly Meeting on April 8\, 2026 at 6:45pm will be Homebrew Night\, our annual show-and-tell evening. Bring your “homebrewed” hardware / software Amateur Radio projects\, DIY apparatus\, and home-made gear. \nWhether your latest creation is polished perfection or still held together with hope and hot glue\, bring it along and share your story! We celebrate low-cost\, scrounged\, and inventive solutions — proof that you don’t need deep pockets to make something amazing. We will celebrate your accomplishments and hear tales of your successes and lessons learned. And there are prizes! \nAll Amateur Radio enthusiasts are welcome: OARC members and non-members\, licensed and not-yet-licensed hams\, friends and family. \nMost monthly meetings are hybrid. Attendance options: \n(1) Attend in person at Scouts Headquarters\, 1345 Baseline Road. Parking is free.\n  CLICK HERE TO GET A FREE TICKET and indicate if you plan to present a Homebrew project. \nThis link takes you to Eventbrite\, a free online ticketing system. Please register in advance for the meeting so that we can be sure to have enough chairs and refreshments for everyone\, and so we can send you a reminder closer to meeting. \n(2) Attend virtually using Microsoft Teams      Need help?\nJoin the meeting now [expired]\nMeeting ID: [expired]Passcode: [expired] \nDraft Agenda\n\nWelcome\, updates\nHomebrew presentation and demonstrate their Homebrew projects\nJudges deliberate on the Clare Fowler Award (1st\, 2nd\, and 3rd prize)\nAttendees vote on the People’s Choice Award\nAwards are presented\n\nPhotos may be taken. Portions of the meeting may be recorded. \n More info on Homebrew Night and the awards appears below… \n\nHow exactly does Homebrew Night work? \n\nPerhaps you have some ideas about a DIY project or piece of home-made gear you’d like to attempt? \nBuild it in time for Homebrew Night in April\, register in advance\, and bring it along. \nPrepare about 5 minutes of remarks: \n\nExplain what you did\nHighlight any particular successes or lessons learned that you experienced along the way \nFinish with one piece of advice you think anyone attempting this project should consider \n\n\n\nWhy is Homebrew Night so important?\n\nBuilding your own amateur-radio equipment is frugal and satisfying.\nTelling other OARC members about your project is fun and offers an opportunity for discussion\, technical questions and answers\, and suggestions for how to address challenges.\nHomebrew Night is a key part of your amateur-radio training: it is first and foremost about experimentation\, development of technical skills\, problem solving.\nYou can win the Clare Fowler Award (1st\, 2nd\, and 3rd place\, decided by a panel of judges) or the People’s Choice award (decided by secret ballot). Award details below.\n\nWhat can I bring?\n\nAny home-built\, non-commercial amateur radio equipment.\nUnfinished projects are welcome; tell us what you’ve done so far.\nIt doesn’t have to be complex\, fancy\, or elaborate\, just something that you have done and want others to know about.\nIt can also be from a kit you build at an OARC kit-building session.Bring out your projects and celebrate your technical accomplishments with the OARC!\n\n\nThe Clare Fowler Award\nClare Fowler was a life-long Amateur Radio operator and a beloved\, long-time member of the Ottawa Amateur Radio Club. He enjoyed countless hours contacting radio operators around the world\, testing and building antennas\, and sharing his knowledge on radio calls\, at Club meetings\, and in international publications. The OARC’s Clare Fowler Award was named for him because he won it so many times! It will be awarded in perpetuity in his memory at the OARC’s Homebrew Night. \nWhat are the criteria used by the judges for the Clare Fowler Award?\nOriginality (30%) \n\n10 – not original\, circuits and applications in most amateur publications\, kits\, existing software.\n20 – modifications to published circuits and applications\, modify existing software\, modifications and additions to kits.\n30 – new original concept and/or application\, little or no info in most amateur publications\, develop new software\, mathematical calculations\, not a kit.\n\nComplexity (30%) \n\n10 – simple\, few parts/components\, dimensions\, layout and lead lengths not very critical or easily measured\, multimeter instrumentation\, make in a day or less.\n20 – fair number of parts/components\, chassis\, circuit board\, some attention to dimensions\, layout and lead lengths\, simple software program\, use vswr meter\, signal generators etc.\, construction time between one day and a week.\n30 – relatively large number of parts/components\, one or more circuit boards\, critical layout\, dimensions\, write and debug software programs\, more advanced instrumentation\, time more than a week.\n\nCraftsmanship (15%) \n\n5 – very simple tools\, crudely constructed 10 – more advanced tools\, nicely constructed\n15 – beautifully made\, clean\, labeled.\n\nPresentation (15%) \n\n5 – short or rambling presentation\, few details or explanation.\n10 – reasonable explanation about item\, how it works and was constructed.\n15 – very well thought out short and concise description of how the item was developed and constructed\, hand out information available.\n\nThe People’s Choice award\nIn 2025\, the OARC introduced a new trophy for the People’s Choice award. The new trophy is a magnetron from a microwave oven found at a local hamfest\, mounted  on a cedar fence-post top as a base. This meets the classic Amateur Radio criteria for “scrounged” and “low or no cost”. In the spirit of Homebrew\, the winner will take it home\, add something fun to it (e.g.\, by soldering or gluing)\, and bring it back to Homebrew Night the following year to be awarded again. Over time\, the award will become increasingly elaborate (and possibly hilarious). \nClick here to read reports from past Homebrew Nights

SUMMARY:OARC Monthly Meeting - March 2026
DESCRIPTION:SPECIAL NOTICE : Tonight’s OARC Monthly Meeting (Wed Mar 11 2026\, 7pm) will be ONLINE ONLY.  While the amount of ice is not great at the moment\, it does continue to accumulate and parking lots and driveways will be slippery long after the storm has passed. \nChris will be online to tell us about Meshtastic and Mesh Core. The Teams meeting coordinates are: \nClick here to Join the meeting now [expired] \nMeeting ID: [expired] \nPasscode: [expired] \nNeed help? \nConnect around 6:45pm and we’ll get underway at 7:00pm. All Amateur Radio enthusiasts are welcome. We look forward to seeing you virtually this evening. \n73\, \nHarrie VE3HYS \n\nPhotos may be taken. Portions of the meeting may be recorded. \nDraft Agenda \n\nWelcome\, updates (Harrie\, VE3HYS)\nPresentation: MeshCore\, LoRa\, Mesh Networking\, and Building a Connected Ottawa and Beyond (Chris Schnobb)\n\n\nBIO: Chris is an IT Security Consultant with years of technical and IT experience. \nIn early 2025\, he began his journey into radio frequency (RF) during a work engagement\, which led him to discover LoRa\, a long-range radio protocol\, as an accessible entry point into the RF space. What started as curiosity quickly became a passion. Chris dove headfirst into LoRa and mesh networking\, becoming one of the leading forces behind Ottawa’s city-wide MeshCore deployment. He is the author of Ottawamesh.ca and a core developer of MeshMapper\, an application built for wardriving and mapping MeshCore networks. You may have seen him on Discord or the mesh under his tag MrAlders0n. \nABSTRACT: MeshCore\, LoRa\, Mesh Networking\, and Building a Connected Ottawa and Beyond \nThis presentation will begin with an introduction to LoRa technology and what makes it such a versatile and accessible platform for radio experimentation\, followed by a look at the value of mesh networks\, including the pros\, cons\, and design considerations for both urban and rural deployments. The presentation will also explore the potential of LoRa mesh networks as emergency communication systems for communities\, as the radios are accessible and anyone can use them. \nThe focus will be primarily on MeshCore\, while touching on Meshtastic and some of the reasons it struggled to gain traction compared to MeshCore’s success in Ottawa and other communities. Chris will cover the motivation behind the move to MeshCore\, the protocol itself\, and the ongoing development efforts that have kept it evolving rapidly. \nThe presentation will highlight tools that have emerged around MeshCore\, including MeshMapper and LetsMesh\, along with practical hardware recommendations and success stories from local deployments. Attendees will see a showcase of repeaters deployed across Ottawa and learn about some of the coolest things the community has accomplished with LoRa. \nChris will also make the case for LoRa and mesh networking as a gateway for younger newcomers to get into RF and eventually pursue their amateur radio licence\, and will touch on some early collaboration with students at Carleton University\, including the ambitious goal of linking Ottawa to Montreal and Quebec City by the end of this summer. \nThe presentation will wrap up with an overview of the Ottawa mesh community\, plans for expansion\, and where to get involved\, from Ottawamesh.ca to Discord and beyond. \nA follow-on workshop is also being planned where members can learn about and purchase a recommended configuration for either a repeater node\, a companion node\, or both\, so they can start experimenting and become part of the Ottawa mesh. Stay tuned for more details. This may include a handout with references as well. \n\n\nOther agenda items TBD

SUMMARY:Winter Field Day 2026
DESCRIPTION:Get involved with Winter Field Day 2026! \nWinter Field Day is an exciting annual event for Amateur Radio enthusiasts\, taking place on the last full weekend of January. It starts at 1600 UTC (11:00am ET) Saturday January 24th and ends 21:59 UTC (4:59pm ET) on Sunday January 25th. \nThis event offers a unique opportunity for radio operators to set up field operations in remote locations\, enabling them to connect with other participants worldwide. You may choose to participate solo or get your your friends\, family\, or whole club involved. \nWinter Field Day is organized by the Winter Field Day Association. The association strongly believes that ham radio operators should practice portable emergency communications in winter environments. This is because freezing temperatures\, snow\, ice\, and other hazards pose unique operational concerns. \nPlease see Winter Field Day’s website for more information about the event.
