DESCRIPTION:Get involved with Winter Field Day 2026! \nWinter Field Day is an exciting annual event for Amateur Radio enthusiasts\, taking place on the last full weekend of January. It starts at 1600 UTC (11:00am ET) Saturday January 24th and ends 21:59 UTC (4:59pm ET) on Sunday January 25th. \nThis event offers a unique opportunity for radio operators to set up field operations in remote locations\, enabling them to connect with other participants worldwide. You may choose to participate solo or get your your friends\, family\, or whole club involved. \nWinter Field Day is organized by the Winter Field Day Association. The association strongly believes that ham radio operators should practice portable emergency communications in winter environments. SUMMARY:Canadian Ski Marathon 2026 - Community Event
DESCRIPTION:Get involved at The Canadian Ski Marathon (CSM) 2025 – Feb 7-8\, 2026!\nThe CSM is great opportunity to keep your skills current and operate in a winter environment. \n The event needs the skills and knowledge of ham operators to run a controlled net for logistics support during this live event with unpredictable traffic. The CSM uses commercial digital radios for health\, safety\, and logistics traffic. 2m ham radio is used as a backup\, when equipment or environmental factors make the commercial rigs difficult or impossible to use\, and for some volunteers who will not have commercial rigs available. Read below for some basic information. \nFor more detailed information and to sign up\, click here: \n\nEnglish:  https://hambone.ca/csm\nFrench:    https://hambone.ca/mcs\n\n Amateur Radio operators are needed to pass traffic relating to checkpoint supply levels\, expected numbers of skiers\, skier transport\, skier extractions\, start and end times for the checkpoints\, chip-and-loop concerns\, and the all-important count of hotdog buns!  \nRadio operators are needed for:\n\n\nnet control – located near Montebello – net controllers MUST be bilingual\n\ncheckpoints – spread along the route – being bilingual is helpful but not necessary\n\n\nThe CSM needs people who are skilled at operating on a controlled net. Unlike most ski events\, there are no winners or losers : it is not a race. Each skier can select his/her own level of challenge and can ski as little as 12 km or up to the maximum of 160 km over the weekend. The CSM is a two-day\, 160 kilometer ski event that is divided into 5 sections each day\, with an average of 16 kms per section. There are feed stations\, first aid and toilets available at the end of each section\, as well as shuttle buses that run between accommodation and checkpoints throughout each day. What started as curiosity quickly became a passion. Chris dove headfirst into LoRa and mesh networking\, becoming one of the leading forces behind Ottawa’s city-wide MeshCore deployment. He is the author of Ottawamesh.ca and a core developer of MeshMapper\, an application built for wardriving and mapping MeshCore networks. You may have seen him on Discord or the mesh under his tag MrAlders0n. \nABSTRACT: MeshCore\, LoRa\, Mesh Networking\, and Building a Connected Ottawa and Beyond \nThis presentation will begin with an introduction to LoRa technology and what makes it such a versatile and accessible platform for radio experimentation\, followed by a look at the value of mesh networks\, including the pros\, cons\, and design considerations for both urban and rural deployments. The presentation will also explore the potential of LoRa mesh networks as emergency communication systems for communities\, as the radios are accessible and anyone can use them. \nThe focus will be primarily on MeshCore\, while touching on Meshtastic and some of the reasons it struggled to gain traction compared to MeshCore’s success in Ottawa and other communities. Chris will cover the motivation behind the move to MeshCore\, the protocol itself\, and the ongoing development efforts that have kept it evolving rapidly. \nThe presentation will highlight tools that have emerged around MeshCore\, including MeshMapper and LetsMesh\, along with practical hardware recommendations and success stories from local deployments. Attendees will see a showcase of repeaters deployed across Ottawa and learn about some of the coolest things the community has accomplished with LoRa. \nChris will also make the case for LoRa and mesh networking as a gateway for younger newcomers to get into RF and eventually pursue their amateur radio licence\, and will touch on some early collaboration with students at Carleton University\, including the ambitious goal of linking Ottawa to Montreal and Quebec City by the end of this summer. \nThe presentation will wrap up with an overview of the Ottawa mesh community\, plans for expansion\, and where to get involved\, from Ottawamesh.ca to Discord and beyond. \nA follow-on workshop is also being planned where members can learn about and purchase a recommended configuration for either a repeater node\, a companion node\, or both\, so they can start experimenting and become part of the Ottawa mesh. In the spirit of Homebrew\, the winner will take it home\, add something fun to it (e.g.\, by soldering or gluing)\, and bring it back to Homebrew Night the following year to be awarded again. This project will be of interest to anyone who has a UHF/VHF Amateur Radio transceiver and is looking for a better antenna to improve their radio transmit-and-receive performance over the rubber-duck antenna (on a handheld). \nDate: Sunday\, June 14\, 2026\nTime: 1:00pm to 4:00pm\nCost: $25 for OARC members / $35 for non-members (the fee covers the cost of supplies and small tools)\nLocation: Scouts Headquarters\, 1345 Baseline Road\, Ottawa \nWORKSHOP OUTLINE \n\nThis simple-but-effective\, and very versatile\, antenna consists of an SO-239 panel-mount connector with four ground plane radials: one connected to each of four fasteners on the corners of the panel mount connector\, and one more vertical rod as the main element.\nIt can be mounted on a piece of PVC pipe and set up temporarily or even permanently attached to a fence or tree or anywhere that will offer a higher location. The connector can be set on the PVC pipe and the feedline drops to the ground through the pipe. The pipe\, feedline\, and feedline connectors are extra but available\, once you know how high you want to put your antenna and how much feedline you need.\n\nIf you don’t have any previous soldering experience\, then we encourage you to take the OARC Soldering Skills workshop first. You are expected to have your own soldering iron and basic tools for this workshop; however\, the Club can provide some basic tools that you can borrow during the session if you don’t have everything you need.
