DESCRIPTION:Join us for the OARC “Come meet the new hams BBQ” and group photo on Saturday\, June 28\, 2025 at 4:30pm (group photo at 4:45pm) at Scouts Headquarters\, 1345 Baseline Road. Please bring a lawn chair. We will go ahead rain or shine. If it is raining\, we will eat indoors. \nBBQ ticket sales have now ended. Proceeds from the BBQ will go to the Scouts Canada National Museum.\n \nThe new hams BBQ coincides with OARC Field Day 2025 at the same location. Right beside our BBQ\, experienced hams will be hard at work contacting as many stations as possible. Field Day has been an annual event since 1933 and is the most popular event in ham radio\, attracting more than 31\,000 hams throughout North America. \nNew hams can catch the excitement of Field Day and prepare themselves to possibly participate next year. We will have a Get On The Air (GOTA) station for new hams\, where an experienced ham will guide you through the process. The same link will allow you to volunteer and indicate what time you are available and your preferred duties (set up\, operating\, tear down\, etc.) \nField Day involves setting up temporary transmitting stations to demonstrate ham radio’s science\, skill and service to our communities. One objective of Field Day is to contact as many stations as possible and to learn to operate in abnormal situations in less than optimal conditions. DESCRIPTION:The OARC is offering an Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) training course over two days on May 24-25\, 2025.\nThis course teaches the skills necessary to provide a wide range of effective emergency/disaster communications. It is designed for certified Amateur Radio operators but we also welcome West Carleton community members who are not licensed\, so they will understand the techniques and can work along side ARES-trained operators during exercises and live events. \nThe course will include: \n\nARES Organization – Roles and Responsibilities\nDeployment Kits\nNet Operations\nOperating Etiquette & Radio Procedures\nDeployed Exercise\n\nPrerequisite: Before taking the ARES Course\, you must take the Introduction to Incident ManagementSystem (IMS 100) course\, available online through the Emergency Management Training Portal Ontario. For more information\, visit this website. \nNow in its 18th year\, the CN Cycle for CHEO features 15 km\, 35 km\, 70 km or 100 km cycling routes\, along with two km and five km walking routes for people of all ages. Hope to see you there. \nFare thee well and 73 Clare Fowler VE3NPC\, Silent Key \nThe world of Amateur Radio lost Clare Fowler on Sunday\, March 16\, 2025. He was a life-long Amateur Radio operator and a beloved\, long-time member of the Ottawa Amateur Radio Club. You can read his full obituary here. Clare enjoyed countless hours contacting radio operators around the world\, testing and building antennas\, and sharing his knowledge on radio calls\, at club meetings\, and in international publications. \nThe OARC’s Clare Fowler Award\, the award for technical merit at our annual Homebrew Night\, was named for him because he won it so many times! It will be awarded in perpetuity in his memory at the OARC’s Homebrew Night.

DESCRIPTION:The OARC will be celebrating World Amateur Radio Day with community engagement activities\nThe Ottawa Amateur Radio Club will be collaborating with West Carleton Disaster Relief to operate portable Amateur Radio stations at several locations in West Carleton to help demonstrate how Amateur Radio can be used to connect communities together\, especially during an emergency or natural disaster. The locations are: \n\nConstance and Buckham’s Bay Community Centre\, 262 Len Purcell Drive\, Woodlawn\, ON\nWest Carleton Client Service Centre\, 5670 Carp Road\, Kinburn\, ON\nHuntley Community Centre\, 108 Juanita Ave\, Carp\, ON\n\nBring your mobile or portable station for a shift and show community members how it works. The OARC will provide Get on The Air (GOTA) stations at some location for curious members of the public. \n\nThe day will run from 9:00am – 3:00pm\, rain or shine\nAt each location\, we need volunteer radio operators for minimum 2-hour shifts (10:am to 12:00pm and 12:00pm to 2:00pm)\nParticipants should be self-sufficient (e.g.\, no food or drinks will be provided)\n\nTo volunteer and indicate your preferred location and shift\, please click this link.
