2026-01-10 mk’s Words – January 2026

Time to say 73 to ’25 and hope for a great 2026.

I’ve said it before, but hearing years with numbers like 2026 make me feel like I’m visiting the future. I now realize I’m actually living in my past’s future. (How’s that for a deep thought to start the year?)

Speaking of the past, some of us were asked to put something together about the OARC’s history for a meeting. Mercifully this was moved off the January meeting to a future one. The more I dug into that rabbit hole, the wider the topic got. I suppose a real historian would know this would happen.

Here are the topics I have come up with so far:

FIELD DAY through the years. – Equipment, sites, organizational style, class, score, “memorable” weather

VHF Through the years. – Repeater history, modes, packet and the PI board story, the repeated rise and fall of 6m interest

MEETINGS. – Memorable meetings, locations, field trips

HAMFESTS. – Fleamarkets, auctions, locations, treasures found and deals regretted

NOTABLE MEMBERS. – Achievements in and outside amateur radio

AWARDS. – Joe Norton, Clare Fowler

PUBLIC SERVICE. – Events, emergencies, civil defense

I’m pretty sure you can come up with some other topics worthy of inclusion. I am certain that you collectively can fill in some of the blank spots than none of those working on the thing can.

Since the end of The Groundwave, our history has been written in sand. We’ll have to do something about that for the hams who look back on the OARC from 2075.
