2026-10-08 OARC Monthly Meeting – Sept 2026 – Report

The September monthly meeting began with brief reports on several important Club Activities undertaken over the summer, including OARC Field Day, OARC Carp Hamfest, OARC Radio in the Park, as well as a report on the Repeater Modernization Project (ongoing). For more details on the Club Activities, read the reports on the website:

The focus of the meeting was the development of OARC Special Interest Groups (SIGs). The session was designed as an interactive workshop to introduce the SIG concept, determine which topics generated the greatest interest, and identify members interested in participating, contributing their knowledge and experience, or helping to organize the groups.

OARC Special Interest Groups (SIGs)

Purpose of the SIG Initiative

As outlined in the September Prez Sez, the purpose of the SIG initiative is to provide members with opportunities to pursue shared Amateur-Radio interests through learning, operating, experimenting, equipment development, activities and partnerships.

The SIG model is intended to:

  • Provide members with the pleasure of doing projects with others of similar interests,
  • Provide a hands-on learning environment and sharing of knowledge and practical experience,
  • Increase member participation and volunteering,
  • Provide members with a pathway from learner to participant and eventually to leader.

Attendance

Participation Number
In person 42
Online 22
Total 64

The strong attendance demonstrated substantial member interest in the SIG concept.

Results

The workshop resulted in five SIGs identified for initial development:

  • HF Operating
  • VHF/UHF Operating
  • Amateur Satellites
  • Alternative Communications
  • Building & Experimenting

Three additional SIG concepts have been placed in reserve for consideration at a future session:

  • Emergency Communications & Community Service
  • Repeater Systems
  • Radio Scouting

The workshop also identified members interested in participating in each SIG, members with knowledge or experience they are willing to share, and members willing to assist with organizing and developing the groups.

Membership Requirement

Participation in OARC Special Interest Groups will be limited to OARC members.

This decision recognizes that OARC will be making significant investments of financial resources, equipment, facilities, training and volunteer effort to establish and support the SIG program. Requiring OARC membership ensures that the program’s benefits are provided to those who financially support the Club and that membership fees contribute to sustaining the resources required for successful SIG operation.

The SIG program is therefore an additional membership benefit and an important component of the value OARC provides to its members.

Documentation and Follow-up

The notes generated by the individual breakout discussion groups have been consolidated into a SIG report containing the discussion results and an action plan for moving the groups forward.

The participant lists developed during the workshop also provide useful information about the potential depth of each SIG. For each participant, the list identifies whether the member:

  • Simply wishes to participate;
  • Has knowledge, experience or equipment to share; and/or
  • Is willing to help organize or develop the SIG.

This information provides an initial pool of potential SIG leaders and volunteers and should make it easier to move from the initial workshop to functioning SIGs.

SIG Communications

Each of the five initial SIGs now has a dedicated OARC distribution-list email address. These addresses provide a simple way for SIG members to communicate without requiring members to learn or adopt a new communications platform.

Members may request to be added to or removed from a SIG distribution list at any time, allowing participation in each SIG to remain flexible as members’ interests change.

Come out to our next meeting on Monday October 27th to stay current on this new initiative.

First OARC Monthly Meeting in our new home

This was the Club’s first monthly meeting at the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 593, 4026 Old Richmond Road, (Bell’s Corners). This new venue is a spacious banquet room that is decorated with memorabilia of past Canadian Forces campaigns and those that served. There is ample seating to suit our needs, with plenty of extra chairs and tables.  There is ample free parking. The building is fully accessible, with 6 accessible parking spots, two ramps suitable for persons with disabilities, and an accessible washroom.

As well, our host, The Legion, has a bar next door to our meeting room, where you can purchase Keurig Coffee for a buck or soft drinks. We can all support the Legion in this way.

Meeting Lessons Learned

We’re still working out the bugs, and we identified several improvements required for future hybrid meetings.

  • Audio: We used only a conference room microphone. As a result, online participants had difficulty hearing some of the discussion, particularly when people away from the front of the room were speaking. Members seated at the back of the room also had trouble hearing.
  • Visuals: Members at the back of the room had difficulty seeing the presentation slides.
  • As OARC continues to operate meetings in a hybrid format, adequate microphones, room amplification and appropriately sized and positioned presentation displays should be considered essential requirements.
