What is RITP?

Radio in the Park (RITP) is an event sponsored by the OARC whose purpose is to demonstrate amateur radio equipment and communications ability to other hams and the general public in an outdoor setting. There is a history and photos of past RITPs on the RITP information page.

Editor’s Note: Radio In The Park 2024 is in the books, and was a success! Bill VA3IEN has provided the following summary. The original notice appears below.

Summary

RITP 2024 had active hams operating, more active hams – new and not-so-new – joining us, some soon-to-be-new-hams visiting – and a few members of the public as well.

Operating were Norman VE3NPP, Sunil VE3SIL, Will VA3ODW, Norm VE3LC, Bill VA3IEN, and Armin (sorry, didn’t remember the call sign) – covering phone, FT8, and CW!

There were end-feds, dipoles, verticals, and a loop.  What a great diversity of gear!

Thanks to Rob VE3RXH for bringing out the Fox hunting gear and hiding some foxes.  Thanks Dave VE3FCQ for coming out and encouraging questions, answering many, and keeping discussions going.  Same for Rob.

Thanks Ed VE2XC and Greg VE3YTZ for coming out; thanks too Ed for the Timbits, and to Greg for taking some photos (see below).

On top of those, almost a dozen licensed hams stopped by to visit and chat; and two soon-to-be hams – who started Harrie’s and Thane’s course the very next day.  Some of those hams brought curious non-hams, and other members of the public stopped by to see what was going on.

It was a great day; excellent weather, and excellent company.  Band conditions were up and down – but that’s amateur radio!

Please come out and join us next year!

OARC RITP 2024 notice

This year, RITP is scheduled for Saturday, September 14, from 9am to 5pm, rain or shine, at Walter Baker Park in Kanata. If you are a ham, bring your portable station and show it off. If you are NOT a ham, bring the family and learn all about the different forms of radio communications – and perhaps get on the air under the supervision of a licensed radio amateur.

Participants should be self-sufficient. No food or drinks will be provided. We are supposed to be provided with a porta-potty but usually there isn’t one. Washrooms are available in the adjacent arena if it’s open; if not, we use the washrooms in the A&W across Terry Fox Drive.

If you need additional information, please email RITP@oarc.net .
